View Modes can be added to any Entity. For our example, we're going to add a new View Mode to an Image type File Entity.

1. Go to Image File Type

Go to Admin > Structure > File Types > Image > Manage Display.

2. Add Custom Display

Within the Image file type's Manage Display screen, click on the Custom Display Settings tab.

Locate the name of the new view mode - in this case, 800 Wide - and check it.

Click the Save button.

A confirmation and new View Mode tab appear.

4. Go to Manage File Display

Click on the Manage File Display tab.

Click on the new 800 Wide tab.

Many confusing options will be presented to you.

5. Set Image Style

Check the Image checkbox.

This will cause an Image vertical tab to appear at the bottom of the screen.

Image Style select box = 800 Wide Scale.

Click the Save Configuration button.

6. View Mode in Media Browser

View Modes are used in the Display As settings in the Media Browser.

When the new 800 Wide View Mode is toggled, the image in the Media Browser is immediately affected by it.
